HIVOS

Black Shell Conservacy Program

Hivos is actively engaged in the black clam restoration project in San Lorenzo, Esmeraldas, addressing the critical need for self-regulation in fishing and the protection of local mangroves. The black clam faces the imminent risk of disappearance due to factors such as overexploitation, habitat destruction, increased fishing efforts, territorial conflicts, loss of traditional knowledge, and ineffective management strategies. By working on this restoration initiative, Hivos aims to not only safeguard the black clam population but also promote sustainable fishing practices and preserve the vital mangrove ecosystems in San Lorenzo.
