Luana’s Story

UNHCR

Luana Reascos, a 13-year-old Afro-Ecuadorian known as Luna, has found passion and community in kayaking. Living in Isla Trinitaria, Guayaquil, Luna, despite being Ecuadorian, has a family history of forced displacement from Colombia. The Kayak Comunitario initiative, supported by DELFI Foundation and CDH with UNHCR, fosters unity among refugees and the host community. Luna, a natural leader, sees kayaking as more than a sport; it's a chance to build networks, escape city violence, and promote inclusivity.
As violence rises in Ecuador, particularly in Guayaquil, where refugees and locals fear criminal activities, Luna embraces kayaking as a means to create a familial bond among the youth. The sport not only brings joy but also encourages values and a more united community. Luna dreams of becoming a professional kayaker, breaking down barriers, and competing internationally. The positive impact of kayaking is evident as Luna and her friends, including Katiuska from Venezuela, engage in playful activities after training, symbolizing hope for a future adorned with medals.
